The movie Harriet first made its appearance in theaters on November 1, 2019. In a span of 2 hours and 5 minutes, we are taken back to the 1800’s to witness the rebellious acts of one brave women: Harriet Tubman. Originally named Araminta Ross, she was born in Dorchester County, Maryland some time in the early 1820’s. At an early age she was witness to more pain that any of us could relate to. She was abused and seperated from her family due to the slave trade. Later, she started her own family when she married fellow slave John Tubman; however, she soon realized that her future and her children’s future only had the promise of a life of captivity. But, Tubman was an unruly, untamed, rebellious soul and because of this she was able to escape slavery. Unfortunately, her husband decided to stay in Dorchester as she journeyed more than 100 miles to the free state of Pennsylvania. Here she flourished into the free women she dreamt of being, but she knew that she couldn’t keep this new found freedom to herself. Not long after, she joined the Anti-Slavery Society and conducted the Underground Railroad. While doing so. she pursued her motto “ I’ma be free or die”. Over the span of ten years she helped over 300 slaves escape to freedom with the help of her trusty revolver. Many reviewers have named the movie “a force to be reckoned with” as Harriet boldly leads many to freedom. The story of Harriet is truly inspiring as she is able to stand up to the slave system and take it down by freeing one slave at a time. However, with this amazing story the movie is very raw to that time with how ruthless the slave owners were and how little power people of color had back in that time. But Harriet overcame the oppression and people telling her what she could and could not do, and with her passion for helping others she started a revolution that would help millions in the future.
