AJR Electrifies Red Rocks

Adam, Jack, and Ryan, are three brothers that had a dream to make music and make people happy. Their dad told them, “You’ll know you made it when you sell out Red Rocks,” and on October 5th that’s exactly what they did.

AJR is a band that doesn’t fit into just one category. They combine styles of electronic, doo-wop, alternative, and poppy tunes to create a unique sound. In 2007, the three brothers began by covering famous songs in their apartment and doing free shows in coffee shops. They soon wrote their own songs and with the release of “Sober Up” they were rocketed to the national stage.

Everything from the band’s history led them to Red Rocks earlier this month. The only way to describe the show was electric.

The whole venue was sold out. Even from the general admission section, 54 rows up, the audience felt entranced by their theatrics.

At the start of the show, a huge screen lit up with words being typed by the band backstage welcoming everyone to the show. They joked it would be almost another hour before they would be on stage, then quickly retracted the statement, and all three brothers and the rest of the band bounded on stage.

Each song had specially choreographed dances and backgrounds. It was evident that AJR was having just as much fun as the crowd. Every new song felt like watching a music video in real life.

The band even stopped the show halfway through to talk directly to the audience and had some fun with audience members poking fun at dances or people who didn’t know all the lyrics. Standing along with everyone it felt more like hanging out with friends rather than a nationwide band.

As the show came to a close, Jack, the lead singer, asked all other members to leave the stage as he sang an acoustic version of “Dear Winter”. This song is a direct ode to his son that has not been born yet and all he wishes to do with his son.

The band left the stage for the end of the show and after only a few minutes of the crowd begging for a few more songs the band came back on stage with even more energy than before.

The show was flawless from start to finish, and no matter your position in the stands everyone felt seen by a band that has helped so many through their hard times and celebrate their accomplishments.
