Although some Raptors may not realize it, a prodigy walks among them.
Jude Kofie, known online as Jude Keyz, is a freshman at Eaglecrest High School. After persevering through the struggles of his youth, he was able to find something that he was passionate about. Today, he is widely known as one of the worlds best piano players.
His big break came when Bill Magnusson, a local piano tuner, was moved by a news feature he saw about Jude. He donated him a beautiful grand piano. This act of kindness enabled Jude to practice on a world-class instrument and share his gift with the world.
Rapidly gaining thousands of followers on social media, Jude became known for having perfect pitch and being able to play by ear. As he gained fame, he was able to collaborate with celebrities and play on major stages.
“I’ve been featured on the Kelly Clarkson Show, ABC, and CBS. I’ve gone to meet Jimmy Fallon, travelled across the world, and I won the 2024 Piano Awards,” said Jude.
Jason Halbert, the music director for the Kelly Clarkson show, has written a plethora of hit songs. Halbert flew from New York to Colorado to help Jude expand his songwriting abilities. This experience changed Jude’s life and gave him hope for his future in the music industry.
“My childhood definitely wasn’t a walk in the park,” said Jude. “I had to overcome a lot of really challenging battles.”
He was born prematurely and had to undergo multiple heart surgeries due to low oxygen levels. He had to be fed by a tube through his stomach until he was eight years old. Later on, he was diagnosed with autism.
His story began five years ago when he found a keyboard in the basement of his house. He quickly began searching up youtube videos of how to function and operate the instrument. When his father realized that he obtained a special talent, he bought him a new piano. He started practicing for roughly three hours a day and took off.
“I come from a really musical family who’s helped me pursue my dream,” said Jude. “I’m also really inspired by gospel artists from Ghana.”
His parents were both born in Ghana and immigrated to Colorado. When they moved to the U.S., his father had hoped to pursue a career in music. However, he was unable to do so because he had to work two jobs to provide for his family.
While his whole family enjoys singing along with him while he plays and embracing the spirit of music, his older brother Denzel, a junior at EHS and skilled drummer, holds a special place in his heart. They often play together at their church.
“My family takes pride in our religion. We go to church every Sunday. How far I’ve come is all God’s grace,” said Jude.
He quickly became the lead pianist at his church and now enjoys serving his community by playing at social gatherings like weddings.
So, when you see Jude in the halls or in class and think of his exceptional talent, don’t forget to recognize his hard work, determination, and resilience.
