Spider-Man Expropriated from Marvel

Spiderman is no longer part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony has owned the rights to Spider-Man for years, when Marvel agreed to help Sony for 5 percent of the profits.

After Far From Home came out Disney wanted to alter their financial agreement. Their previous agreement had Sony making 95 percent of the profits, and Marvel making only 5 percent. When negotiating a new agreement they hoped to increase their profit to 50 percent. Since Sony rejected the deal Marvel cannot use Spiderman, because the rights are owned by Sony.

Marvel is releasing a theatrical re-release of Far From Home, adding in a few extra minutes of footage.  Putting out a theatrical re-release allows Sony to make even more money off of the movie than it already has from its original release in theatres. Theatrical re-releases are rare in the cinematic world. Many are excited and plan to go see the re-release. That was until the financial disagreement between the two companies. As the news broke to Marvel fanatics, many grew unsupportive of the theatrical re-release because of the split, almost as an attempt to protest the split between the two companies. Some say that Sony re-releasing the movie is a desperate ploy to rake in as much money as possible before they split with Marvel.

Tom Holland’s Spider Man is essentially not in the MCU now that Sony and Marvel cannot come to terms on sharing the character. However, there are two movies that are supposedly still planned. Although Spider-Man movies will continue, now that they aren’t Marvel movies, they simply won’t have the same wow factor and complexity.

Now that the character is solely owned by Sony once more Spider-Man can easily cross-over with Venom, also owned by Sony. Sony’s CEO, Tony Vinciquerra, stated that he thinks the Spider-Man films did fine without being a part of Marvel’s movies, did better being a part of the movies, and will be fine after not being a part of Marvel films. He believes Sony can deliver without Marvel’s support and will.

Many fans are unsupportive of the split, hoping that Marvel and Sony will eventually come to an agreement, effectively bringing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. How will the absence of Spider-Man affect Marvel’s storyline? After all, he is supposed to be the next Tony Stark, isn’t he?
