New Year; New Look

Edmond Kunath, Reporter

Over the summer, a large renovation project took place in two of the courtyards here at Eaglecrest. The upper decks of both courtyards located near the gyms and near the cafeteria received a new concrete tile floor instead of the brick formerly used. The lower section of the courtyard near the cafeteria also received new benches replacing the old tables. The refresh of the courtyards are primarily to benefit the students and staff of Eaglecrest.

Of course not everything could have been changed in the courtyards. One example is that the tables on the upper level of the courtyard located near the cafeteria are still there. There are also the metal railings that are still along the upper levels of both courtyards to make sure that no one falls off the ledge and injures themselves.

But are there more reasons behind all the new renovations? Not only were the courtyards in need of a renovation for the benefit of students and staff, but the renovation was in response to Eaglecrest being chosen as the location to host for the 2020 National Student Council Conference in June 2020. This conference features members of Student Council from high schools across the United States.

According to the National Student Council, also known as NatStuCo, the conference is, “A unique opportunity for student council members and advisers from across the country to sharpen their leadership skills and build their peer networks.” Student Council members are asked to, “Rise Up and Lead and increase the impact of their student councils,” with the phrase being a reference to the Rocky Mountains. Students will refine the ways that their own student council will work while advisers will learn and share information on how to manage and help their own student councils. There will also be speakers to present at the event to help convey a message back to students and their schools. The conference for 2019 was held back in June at South Fayette High School in McDonald, Pennsylvania.

More information for the event will be presented as the date gets closer for the event in June. The information will be available at their website, http://www.natstucoconference.org/. Overall, both the courtyards and the National Student Council Conference in 2020 will present a great benefit to help not only the students and staff, but help represent the leadership and capability that Eaglecrest truly has.
