Golden Globe Glory

Along with all the other aspects of art, such as painting, drawing, reading, and writing, theatre and films both play an important role in our daily human lives. Which is why the actors and actresses who perform astoundingly received some well deserved awards at the Golden Globes this January.

The films and theatrical productions produced this past 2018 were especially promotive of the true diversity of cultures and ethnicities within our nation. Movies such as Black Panther, and BlacKKKlansman, both of which were acted out by casts of breathtakingly talented African American men and women, including John David Washington, Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, and many more. These movies showed the brutal history of mistreatment towards the African American culture, and how heroes within their communities played their parts in making the world a better, less hate-filled place.

The winner of the drama category, Bohemian Rhapsody, with the main role played by the amazing Rami Malek, portrayed the life of Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen. The movie focuses on how Mercury came to terms with his sexuality and spread the message of how important it is to be yourself, despite what others say to you.

And of all the animated movies that came out in 2018 (and early 2019), Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse won best animated film, this time spreading the message that anyone can be behind a hero’s mask, no matter your race, gender identity, culture, body type, religion, etc. Anyone can be a hero and you don’t have to fit the typical white, societal mold that usually portrays superheroes in the comic world.

Many actors and actresses who won awards at this ceremony were people of color, including but not limited to: Sandra Oh (best performance by an actress in a TV series-drama), Alfonso Cuaron (best screenplay-motion picture, best motion picture-foreign language, best director-motion picture), Mahershala Ali (best performance by an actor in a supporting role in any motion picture) and many more. This years Golden Globes awarded some of the most talented actors and actresses, and was one of the most diverse thus far. All of the movies were filled with casts of talented actors, yet the winners topped off the truly talented ones who brought the best messages and entertainment to the audiences. Diversity was awarded, women, people of color, and positive messages all around were brought to the tables of the Golden Globes and finished off 2018 with at least a sense of accomplishment in the theatrical/film category of art.

Now we await to see what is in store for 2019 to bring forth with films and theatre, and if this art can continue to promote diversity and talent brought in by both old and new, man or woman, black or white; a whole range of talented actors and actresses who may have even been present at this most recent awards show. And some of the same ones who claimed awards at this show are now nominated for awards at the Oscars, such as Rami Malek, Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, and movies such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Roma, Black Panther, and many more.
