Not The Enemy
August 23, 2018
“THE FAKE NEWS IS THE OPPOSITION PARTY. It is very bad for our Great Country… BUT WE ARE WINNING!” -President Trump (via Twitter)
Less than a week ago, President (I hesitate to even call him that) Trump claimed that the media is the “opposition party.”
As if the journalists that inform the public of fact in attempt to ensure their liberties could ever be the enemy.
Our nation doesn’t understand how crucial the information provided by the media is; it helps to grow our understanding of the world around us, keeps political figures in check, and is a central part to our freedom of expression that fuels our democracy. Let me remind you that journalists have been killed for their desire to inform the public and inspire change.
I suppose Trump forgot about the First Amendment right of the “freedom of the press.”
We’re all well aware of what happens when the government starts to censor the media; a complete breakdown of democracy, and therefore freedom, occurs. Why would we want to destroy the very thing that the Founding Fathers spent their life’s work developing? Something that millions of immigrants, both past and present, dream of being a part of?
I know many people and organizations that certainly treasure the media, as they should. It’s clear that Trump and his toy soldiers want to destroy the very prospect of journalism.
What baffles me the most is that the president of the United States is the one mocking society’s source of information and liberties, just because he’s too cowardly to face the facts provided by the media. It’s important to point out that Trump’s rant occurred on Twitter (what a mature and sophisticated means of sharing your opinions, Mr. Trump).
America ceases to be great when our source of information, a constant reminder of the potential for knowledge, is under scrutiny because one man’s “feelings” have been hurt.
(Like Trump has any emotion anyway. That’s been vividly displayed ever since he stepped into the White House).
I guess it’s not really a surprise though that Trump, an ignorant, arrogant man, wants to demean the very thing that nurtures our understanding of society. He wants us on the same level as him, to share the same incomplete view of the world, and we must resist.
