Football Rushes to an 11-0 Season
November 15, 2017
For the second year in a row, the Boys Football team went undefeated in the regular season and won the League.
Boys Varsity Football had a great regular season finishing undefeated at (10-0).
On the regular season, Senior Kyle Wagner stated, “Undefeated is always nice. I feel like we have been playing pretty well for who we are. We are becoming the team who we are supposed to be.”
Forming into the team they are supposed to be is something they have been pushing for every week this season.
Team Co-Captain Kyante Christian spoke on their season: “We’ve had our ups and downs this season; mostly the entire goal this season was to go 1-0 each week. We’ve done that up to this point.”
They’ve accomplished that goal and are taking that same mentality into the playoffs. Leading the team in touchdowns for the regular season was Kenny Wantings with 17. With receiving touchdowns was Theryne Sandoval-Jimenez (6) along with receiving yards (716). For all-purpose yards was Victor Garnes with 1,106 yards. And to round it out Jalen Mergeson finished with 2,513 total yards.
Co-Captain Jalen Mergerson had many specatular plays during the regular season
For Junior Sebastion Andujar “Seeing QB J- Merg pull off a Michael Vick type move during the Bear Creek game was great.”
This past week the Raptors took on Fountain-Fort Carson in the first round of the playoffs. They ended up winning the game 35-14 to extend their season. It was an all-around team effort as they got points on the board from Kenny Wantings, Jalen Mergerson, Corey Corbin, and Theryne Sandoval- Jimenez.
This season has truly been historical for Eaglecrest football as this is only the third time they have gone undefeated in the regular season.(‘93,’16,’17). This will be Head Coach Mike Schmitt’s, second straight team to go undefeated in the regular season.
“The team goal is State and it’s been that since our freshman year.” Senior Sam Onilenla continued, “As a collective whole we take it one game at a time, but we know where we want to be when our last season ends together.”
The team gets ready for the games the same way every week, for the most part. Junior Jake Wiley stated, “We prepare very well all week so we can come out strong on game day.”
This week the Raptors feel prepared to take on Cherry Creek High School in the second round of the playoffs.
Cherry Creek High School is currently ranked number 8 in the state with a record of 9-2 and 5-0 in league. The game is Saturday at 1 p.m at Legacy Stadium.
