Overpopulation at EHS
As the new school year has started, and the class of 2019’s freshman have entered our school, the school is reaching population highs compared to years past. The younger the classes are for some reason the more students they tend to have. The Senior class has 553 students, while the Freshman class has a very large population of 662. This is not necessarily a bad thing for the school, but a lot of students can lead to issues such as more district spending and more students per classroom. This may be due partially to the choice of students who decided to partake in the school of choice option.
We are not the only school that is in this situation, Brighton High School is in a situation where there are so many kids that Freshman and Sophomores come at a separate time than the Juniors and Seniors.
Because the Juniors and Seniors come to school so much later than the underclassmen (Juniors & Seniors @9/Freshman & Sophomores @7), they end up not going home until 5:10. And when you get home that late it can eliminate time for extracurricular activities and sports.
This is a problem that is occurring in Brighton High School along with other high schools around the state. A big problem that occurs when schools have an excess in students, is that the student to teacher ratio becomes very high, which can affect the learning of student.
