How The Grinch Stole Our Hearts
January 10, 2019
Dr. Seuss published How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 1957. In the year 2000 the book was turned into a movie produced by Universal Studios. Everybody knew the story of the Grinch. Now, in 2018, Illumination Entertainment decided to make an adaptation of the story.
When the trailers first came out, those who loved the 2000 Grinch movie were skeptical. Would it be as good as the first or would it totally ruin the story? The Grinch was released in theaters on November 9, and every showing thus far has been mostly sold out, the only seats available were those in the front of the theatre.
The opening of the movie began with the narrator talking, like a lot of Dr. Seuss movie adaptations. Those who read the book as a young child would recognize some of the odd rhyming going on, which automatically gave the movie a satisfactory start. The 21st century objects and technology used in the movie added a modern twist, and helped the audience connect to everything going on more so than the 2000 movie version.
However, there were details that did not make the 2018 version better than the 2000 version. The older movie was live action and helped the audience have a more realistic view of the book. The animated movie did not have that realism to it.
Instead of totally following the book, which the producers did very well, there was a certain spin to some details in the story. The story of why the Grinch hated Christmas being one of them. The book did not really give a reason why he hated Christmas only saying some crazy theories. Universal Studios gave a small backstory of the Grinch having a crush on a fellow classmate and getting bullied because of his Christmas gift to her. After that he hated Christmas. It was refreshing to see Illumination Entertainment take a different story path and come up with a more believable and modern explanation to hating Christmas.
The Grinch, admittedly, is not as wonderful as the original. As a remake, the producers changed many things that took away the original story plot line. With new animation technology today, there are multiple movies coming out that are animated. Too many to make The Grinch stand out amongst all others. Another reason that the live action is better, because if stood out amongst all other movies of that time period.
Though, every year, the movie industry gets better and makes their movies better, and The Grinch is no exception. Filled with joy and Christmas cheer, this movie is one many people, including myself, would buy and watch again.
