The Grammys have been the biggest annual music awards show for the past 67 years. Therefore, winning a Grammy award is a prestigious accomplishment for any musician. Every year, over 13,000 members of the Recording Academy vote on the winners for a wide selection of categories. Certain songs or albums by artists are first nominated to certain categories, and then once a quota of nominees is entered into a category, the winner is voted on.
One artist that stood out during this year’s Grammys was Kendrick Lamar. He won in 5 different categories. He won three of those categories with “Not Like Us”, a diss track against Drake.
Other prominent artists that won Grammy awards included, Sabrina Carpenter with two awards, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars who won an award for their hit song “Die with a Smile,” Chappell Roan who won the award for Best New Artist, Doechii’s win with her new album “Alligator Bites Never Heal,” Shakira’s win with her album “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran”, and Gojira with her outstanding performance of “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)” at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
In the midst of all these less disputed winners, a vast number of people were upset that Beyoncé’s album, “Cowboy Carter,” won the award for Best Country Album of the Year. They feel the way they do because Beyonce has been a pop singer for the entirety of her career. This was controversial because of the common belief that she could have won any genre because of her overwhelming popularity. Many also believe that she “stole” the award from the other Country artists that had the chance to win the award just because she has been immensely popular over the last 25 years.
Aside from the musical awards, several celebrities made iconic appearances, such as Jaden Smith, the son of songwriter and actor Will Smith. He came dressed with a black house on his head. He went viral all over social media for his unexpected outfit. A more criticized celebrity appearance that took place during the Grammy Awards was when Kanye West’s wife, Bianca Censori, wore a very revealing dress that she and Kanye were later scrutinized for.
