The Electric State is a 2025 Sci-Fi/Adventure film based on the 2018 illustrated novel by Simon Stålenhag. The Netflix original movie starred Millie Bobby Brown as the lead protagonist and Chris Pratt as the most crucial supporting character. The movie also featured Stanley Tucci and Giancarlo Esposito as antagonists. While there were a lot of live-action characters, some of the movie’s cast members were robots. They were an integral part of the film.
The film is about a world similar to the Earth that we live on, except in the movie, robots were developed to help humans with work, chores, and anything else that they might need support with. The film takes place in the mid-’90s and is centered around a girl named Michelle.
Not long before the main events of the movie began, Michelle’s parents were killed in a car accident. Her and her brother nearly died as well. Her brother was taken from her, and although he was alive, she was told that he had perished. Robots eventually waged war against the humans in protest of not having enough freedom. However, the robots lost the war because the Sentre CEO, Ethan Skate, developed a neurotechnology that allowed humans to virtually fight using drone-robot bodies. The development of this technology led humans to continuously live their lives in their robot bodies. The genuine robots were completely outcast from society.
Michelle’s brother was taken by Sentre and was used to power their neurotechnology across the globe during the war. He managed to virtually possess a Cosmo robot and sought out Michelle to inform her that he was not dead.
Throughout the film, Michelle and the Cosmo robot sought out her brother’s real body. They come across a war veteran named Keats, and then Herman, his robot companion. The four of them journeyed to find other robots to form an army to take over Sentre Headquarters and find Michelle’s brother.

Viewers and critics have had mixed opinions about the plot of the movie. According to a top Rotten Tomatoes film critic, the movie featured many “moments of profound beauty” and was “a mesmerizing visual experience.” While this review is more positive, another top critic said that while “the quality of the special effects is phenomenal,” the movie still featured “emotionally inert storytelling.” Based on the majority of audience reviews, it was evident that people would either give the movie intense criticism and rate it a 1/5 or show complete satisfaction with the content of the movie and rate it a 5/5.
Nonetheless, the film is a completely different experience for everyone. Some love it, and some don’t. It entirely depends on how individuals perceive the films most important aspects.
Overall, The Electric State featured an adequate plotline and exceptional visuals. I believe that The Electric State was a good movie. I found the plotline rather enjoyable and would recommend watching it.
