Mufasa is the prequel to the Disney classic The Lion King. For more than twenty years, the movie has had a great impact on babies, young kids, teens, and even adults. This movie is about Mufasa’s story. Before this movie, a lot of people didn’t know his story, and if they did, then they knew very little.
In The Lion King, Mufasa is the father of Simba, the story’s protagonist. But in the beginning of the movie, Mufasa tragically died in front of Simba. This is known to be one of the saddest deaths that Disney has ever produced. This death was so memorable because it occured so early in the movie. It also made it harder for us as an audience to understand Mufasa. Although he was loved, we didn’t know anything about him besides the fact that he was respected by everyone. We also know that he was a good husband due to the fact that he and Sarabi had a strong and healthy relationship. He also loved his son very much.
The movie Mufasa is told through the eyes of a baboon named Rafiki. He is one of the main characters in the Lion King. This movie develops a deep understanding of all of it’s characters.
“Mufasa really spoke to me throughout the movie because he believes he’s not good enough,” said junior Priscilla Trujillo.
Throughout the movie, Scar and Mufasa go through lots of struggles. Since Scar was supposed to be the king, Musfasa didn’t want to speak up for anything. However, Mufasa made a lot of big decisions. He was hesitant to take credit for any of the challenges that he faced and fixed. He didn’t face all of these challenges by himself though. He went through these challenges with many of the other characters. His actions represented a true leader, so having Scar take the credit for his work further proves the idea that he was meant to be king. The only thing that Mufasa wanted was to have everyone in the animal kingdom work together and be united. Before he became a leader, every animal was only associated with their own kind and wouldn’t help anyone else. But by the end of his rule, Mufasa got everyone to stand together and defeat Kiros, the stories main antagonist, because he tried to take over Milele.
“In the movie, you see him trying to hide his amazing talents because he believes he’s not good enough to have them,” said Trujillo.
In the 1994 The Lion King movie, Mufasa and Scar are brothers. But in the 2025 Mufasa movie, we learn that they aren’t blood brothers. Instead, Scar saved Mufasa after he got ripped away from his parents due to an accident. Scar’s dad, Obasi, had a strong belief that strays portrayed the lions they joined. Additionally, he believed that if a lion saw a stray, they should eat them. Scar and his mother, Esha, convince Obasi to let Mufasa stay. Scar wanted him to stay because he always wanted a brother. Obasi said that the only way Mufasa could stay with them was if he stayed with the female lions. With that being said, he was raied solely by the women. Growing up with Esha, he learned how to hunt like the female lions did. He was also very talented at all the skills that the female lions taught him. During the movie, he continuously demonstrated his skills. In one of the scenes, we saw how Esha taught Mufasa to see all of the miles around him just by closing his eyes and using the wind to pick up his surroundings.
It was announced in 2019 that The Lion King would be adapted into a live-action movie even though a lot of people aren’t fond of those kinds of films. Disney making Mufasa a live action movie after the hate it recieved was bold.
“I think the live-action is more captivating than the animation, but to be fair, the animations were 10+ years ago. I think a modern animation could be just as cool if not cooler than the live-action,” said senior Isaac Olszewski.
After the movie came out, a lot of people wanted to see what it would’ve looked like if it was animated. I believe that the audience would have liked to see the animated version because that’s how they saw it when they were kids. When teenagers and adults see prequels or remakes of their old favorites, they want to feel a sense of nostalgia.
Mufasa was a movie that I feel like everyone needs to watch if they are or were The Lion King fans. This movie made us feel closer with all of the characters that we love or used to love so much. We also get to learn more about the villain Scar and why he became so evil. This movie was definietly worth the watch.
