During the 2023-24 school year, the decision to get rid of second lunch for the 2024-25 school year was made. When this was announced, students were outraged because the cafeterias were already crowded. Getting rid of one of the lunches was not going to help this problem. Both lunch capacities increased by 50% making everyone more cramped and rushed to eat when they get their food.
If people do not rush to lunch either after their second or third period, they will be stuck waiting in the lunch line for the majority of the 33 minutes they have to eat. Once they get out of line with their food, they are hurried to eat and do not have time to enjoy their meals before they are forced to go back to class.
“A traffic jam is the best way to describe the lines for how slow they move and everyone trying to cut to the front,” said senior Evan Rosen.
Despite having three lines, people just move lines to whatever is moving the fastest, therefore creating more back-ups and bigger crowds that don’t move.
“The crowds of people are annoying because they stop the lines from moving quicker,” said senior Liam Kikuchi.
If everyone just got their food and got out the lines would drain out a lot quicker, letting people have more time to socialize and eat their lunch.
The parking lot traffic during lunch has also worsened with the surge of students leaving during lunch. Many students have realized that it would be better to leave campus for lunch instead of suffering in the crowd trying to get school lunch. With all the cars leaving at once, it backs up the parking lot, making it take extra long to get out, and cutting down the time for their lunch even shorter.
The removal of the second lunch has outraged the entire student population of Eaglecrest High School. It causes more negatives than positives, such as less time for more kids to eat, bigger crowds, and more trash to clean up. The seating options have also stayed the same amount, even with the enlarged student population in each lunch.
