The Eaglecrest football team triumphed last night over the Castle View High School Sabercats with a final score of 35-0.

The Raptors went into this game like they do with every game: confident and self-assured.

“There’s a difference between confidence and arrogance,” said quarterback Jalen Mergerson, junior, “and we just can’t get arrogant, thinking we’re better because of our record.”

The game started out rough with no points scored in the first quarter.

“We missed a lot of open opportunities to score points early.” said head coach Mike Schmitt.

However, he, and the rest of the team, were satisfied with the end result.

The team started getting back into their element in the second quarter with a 46-yard touchdown by junior Kenny Wantings. Four short minutes after that the team scored another; this time a 4-yard pass from Mergerson to senior Tyler Peabody.

During the third quarter, in what was the best play of the night, Victor Garnes ran a 98-yard pass to bring the score up to 21-0. Soon following, Wantings and Garnes both brought in two more touchdowns, in the fourth quarter, to have the score ending at 35-0.

The team hopes to continue their 8-0 winning streak going into next week’s league championship against Ralston Valley. Winning that game could guarantee the team a spot in the playoffs.
